The North Raleigh Farmer's Market is a year round market. That means we are open all four seasons; in the Spring production on farms start ramping up and our farmers are ready to bring you all they have to offer. Therefore the Grand Opening of the NRFM is May 1st to coincide with the Falls River Town Center's Spring Fling. Tomorrow, April 24Th, many farmers will be at the market with a great deal of wares for you to purchase, but there will be even more vendors May 1st. Our market after May 1st will be Saturdays, 8am until noon, and Wednesdays, 2pm until 6pm. Next week I will send out the official invitation for the Grand Opening. I will also ask you to share that information with your friends on Facebook and elsewhere. This will be essential for a large turnout to the Spring Fling and the North Raleigh Farmer's Market Grand Opening. Tomorrow come visit me at Falls River Books at Falls River Town Center, if you want to help promote the market.

Thanks,

Steven Elliot

The North Raleigh Farmer's Market needs more volunteers to assist with set-up and break down for the market. Duties include setting up signs, cones and the information booth then assisting putting these items away. It is an excellent community service opportunity for high school students. Market times are Wednesday 4pm to 7pm and Saturday 8am until noon. Volunteers may open, close or both - either day or both. If you are interested respond here with your information including your name, and telephone number.

Wow! I cannot believe June is almost over..It has been busy for everyone..Father's day was a day of remembrance.. Just a few short years ago my Dad rode a horse drawn wagon to the church for the last time...I made the trip with him up and down Orange Grove Road many times over the years but that Fathers Day was our last..Dad was a Farmer and his hands were testimony to his work..He loved animals and enjoyed hooking a team and working them or taking kids and adults for rides on our wagon..I miss him and yet i know he is in a grand place!         I am  watering everyday and the heat has been tough but corn is coming in, Cantaloupes,tomatoes,okra, peppers and beans ,beans and more beans are all really producing.. Peas are almost ready..Just a side note here >>> I have already canned 56 Qts of beans ..I will can some more of the late beans.. Tomatoes are next on my list to can but corn will be cut off the cob and frozen this week or next.        I have just planted about an acre of late beans,squash,peas and butter beans where our first Corn was.I am planting another planting of sweet corn and popcorn today..Michael is planting tomatoes today and more peppers..      Our new web site is not up but it should be soon.. I hope to include a little history of the Revolutionary war skirmish "The Battle of Kirk's Farm".. This  battle was down Cane Creek from us a little ways... The Web site should make Getting my e-mails out  easier and there will be a blog for those of you wanting to ask questions or make comments..        Cane Creek will be opening a market in Cary off Kildare Farm Rd.. It will be located on the Kiesler Farm on the right before Kildare crosses 1/64...Market should be open there on July 2...Also you can Call and come by the Farm any afternoon from 4-7...You can e-mail or call with your orders and orders will be ready for you....     Phone numbers are :  Farm   919 942 7992      Bobby Mb   357 0746      Michael    357-4115   If you miss us just leave a number and/or a message ...         I want to personally thank all of you for supporting us and our efforts to continue Farming here at Cane Creek.Keeping a farm going this day and time is not easy.. I do want to sell a few building sites on the farm including the house i live in...All the land will be protected and the farmland will continue to be farmed and will never be developed..Those that live here will have access to all the farm , have first opportunity at the vegetables and meats grown here and a peace of mind knowing there will never be more development  around them..Plus living on a beautiful Farm in an awesome community.             Thanks again, Bobby Kirk              Cane Creek Farms "Kirks ,,Farming on Cane Creek since before the Revolutionary War"

Fox Hill Meadery at the NRFM 06/23/2009
0 Comments

Hey Steve,

Here is a quick write up on Fox Hill:

Fox Hill Meadery was established in 2007 by Jennifer and Jason Russ who moved to Marshall with their daughter

Abby from Northern Virginia. Production started shortly thereafter and commercial sales began in the fall of 2008

with Jennifer focused on sales/marketing and Jason on production.

Fox Hill won 2 medals in the prestigious Mazer Cup International mead competition, which judged over 130 commercial meads from around the world in 2009. This is extremely rare for a new Meadery.

Jason’s brewing career began as a passionate home brewer of beer. He won numerous awards for his brews, became a certified beer judge, and in time owned and operated a home brew supply store. His goal was to open a brewery. One day a friend and fellow home brewer brought a new brew for him to taste, mead. He loved the flavor and started to make his own, almost to the exclusion of brewing beer. In the process a new goal developed, open a meadery.

Flavor development in traditional meads depends mainly on the kind of honey(s) used. Both yeast type and aging primarily affect sweetness and alcohol content (normally between 10 and 16 percent). The addition of spices and fruit juices complicates the process. To be successful, the flavors must complement the chosen honey.

Fox Hill Meadery currently offers five different meads all of which are oak aged. These are –

·         Traditional, 13% – semi-sweet made with multiple honeys;

·         Ginger-Apricot Honey Wine (Mead), 12% - light sweetness with ginger and apricot tanginess;

·         Spice Mead, 11% – sweetness balanced by the blend of allspice, cinnamon, orange zest, and cloves;

·         Blackberry Honey Wine (mead), 11.7% – off-dry to semi-sweet;

·         Special Reserve Mead, 16% – off-dry, bold and complex.

Visit the Fox Hill website (http://www.foxhillmead.com) for more information about their mead styles, suggested food pairings, ordering, and where to buy and try. You can find us in Raleigh at the North Raleigh Farmers’ Market, where you can have a free tasting and find out for yourself the magic of mead!

Wassail!
